The owner of this typical London terrace sought an extension that added a more space to the kitchen and dining area, alongside plenty of soft, natural light. Given that the property is somewhat overlooked, large panes of glass weren’t an option, so we worked with architects Forgeworks to create a striking ceiling form that allowed for an abundance of diffused natural light, while combining a strong use of materiality and visual interest.

We constructed a row of plywood-boxed skylights that sit above two layers of intersecting, crosshatch ply which is seamlessly integrated into the space by way of a perpendicular plywood section. The geometry of this feature is then reflected in the white-painted brick wall, which is set in adjacent Flemish and basket weave bonds. Further built-in plywood features give cohesion to the space, with polished concrete and flush kitchen cabinetry completing the clean, contemporary finish.
