Extension and remodelling of a Grade II listed mid-nineteenth century home on a garden square in Hackney, East London. Equal respect for period and contemporary architecture delivers a house of two halves, where cohesion and balance are achieved through a subtle palette and pared back material approach. The experience of the house is radically transformed with the creation of a new kitchen, dining and living space which opens out on to a stepped garden.
Sitting on a classic period square, the three storey semi-detached villa has been in the possession of the owners for over 20 years. Their brief was to open up the lower ground floor, which had a compact kitchen with living, bedroom and ensuite - all featuring cellular spaces with low ceilings which felt out of balance with the generous upper floors. There was also very little connection to the garden due to a split [...]
We worked with architects Bradley Van Der Straeten to make Zoe and Benedict’s bold and bohemian dreams a reality, and transformed their four-storey home into a series of colour-loving living spaces that reflect the couple’s eclectic creativity. The property had previously been divided into two dwellings, and so needed to be converted into one, fully connected space in order to reinstate the home to its fullest potential.
We removed every internal wall on the basement level, and lengthened it with an infill single-storey extension to create a fully open plan, linear space that connects seamlessly to the rest of the home via a new stair. The upper floors held a trove of period features, which were preserved and made poignant through Zoe and Benedict’s artful use of colour, and considerately offset by the more modern mood of the [...]
View projectThis double-fronted Georgian home in East London held huge potential for architectural intervention. It was ripe for re-imagination into a glorious family home after five years left empty – and suffering for it. The clients had clear references in mind, which included modern art, the Art Deco era, and the client’s upbringing in Spain. Architects Bradley Van Der Straeten centred their design around a new, triple-height stair gallery that we sensitively constructed through the building’s core. Crafted from metal and timber, it provides continuous visual connections throughout the home while flooding it with natural light. The considered use of colours, materials and traditional features make this home welcome and warm, despite its generous [...]
View projectWe worked with Forgeworks on the rear extension of this Victorian terrace, creating a space that feels intimate for two yet caters for family gatherings and partys. As the home is located on within a conservation area, sensitivity in design and build were paramount. The solution was to execute a modern intervention that complements the traditional through texture and quality.
Design-led architecture and materiality were key, and the result incorporates flexible dining bench seating, reading nook spaces and concealed storage all realised in a striking combination of charcoal brickwork, smoked oak woodwork and clean, contemporary joinery. A new lightwell, a corner window seat, and full-height sliding doors ensure plenty of natural light, as well as continuity well into the [...]
View projectWe constructed this striking two-storey extension as a complementary addition to an existing Buckinghamshire home, creating it in contrast to the more traditional aesthetic of the adjacent building, to which it was to be connected by a bridge. Working with architects Bradley Van Der Straeten, the design proposed a whole new volume externally, and seamlessly merged the old and new internally.
This project is defined by its strategic use of simple and select materials. The exposed, long grey bricks are repeated both inside and out, their rugged constant considerately offset by the uninterrupted surfaces of the clean white walls, large terrazzo panelling and monochrome kitchen cabinetry. The extensive glazing and double-height ceilings ensure the space is always bathed in natural [...]
View projectWe worked with Kate Jackson Architects to realise their client’s dream of restoring this historical home in Beaconsfield into a versatile family home. The house needed to be extended and refurbished to evolve with the family, accommodating the children as they grow up from babies to young adults, as well as the comings and goings of further family, friends and live-in help along the way. Cohesion across both time and space were essential in achieving this brief.
We maximised the size of the house (within planning) with a rear extension, a first floor and roof extension, an annex building, a garden studio, a pool room, and a portico to connect the annex to the main house. High quality materials and artfully executed joinery give the modern additions a clean, contemporary feel yet remains in tune with the home’s original character. Considered contrasts – such as the striking main stair – celebrate the overall quality of [...]
View projectThe owner of this typical London terrace sought an extension that added a more space to the kitchen and dining area, alongside plenty of soft, natural light. Given that the property is somewhat overlooked, large panes of glass weren’t an option, so we worked with architects Forgeworks to create a striking ceiling form that allowed for an abundance of diffused natural light, while combining a strong use of materiality and visual interest.
We constructed a row of plywood-boxed skylights that sit above two layers of intersecting, crosshatch ply which is seamlessly integrated into the space by way of a perpendicular plywood section. The geometry of this feature is then reflected in the white-painted brick wall, which is set in adjacent Flemish and basket weave bonds. Further built-in plywood features give cohesion to the space, with polished concrete and flush kitchen cabinetry completing the clean, contemporary [...]
